Why are there so many people with mental problems?

How did they take care of these problems before 1950?Why are there so many classifications and sub classes? It boggles the mind !Are we all looney tunes?
Answer:
Why would you ask such a nutty question? Are you crazy?
I have a chemical imbalance. Sheesh.
everyone is loony tunes...its part of life...its better that way...or things would be boring...but everyone has issues...just some people takeit more seriously then others
I don't think as many people admitted it before the '50s. It's ok today to seek help and not worry about loosing your job or your family because they are embarrassed by you.
The wording of your question makes it sound like it is "them" that are the nutty ones. Some people just hide their quirks better than others. And somethimes the quirks are just too big to hide so they get federal funding and a name.
1. Not enough affordable health care to cover costs.
2. Lack of medical insurance to cover diagnosis.
3. Self-denial of disease.
4. Not enough research on family histories before conceiving.
5. Escalated financial problems triggering mental disorders.
6. Hereditary.
7. Poor marital and relationship decisions leading to abuse.
8. High cost of prescribed medication.
9. Patients not taking the prescribed medication.
10. Frustration.
11. Loneliness.
12. Life.
i truly don't beleive that many people who are diagnosed with"mental ilnesses" have anything wrong other than a natural reaction to lifes ups and downs. some of this is just completely overdiagnosed. doctors seem to like to write alot af prescriptions lately. im not saying some people don't benefit from medication, but it has gone overboard. people in the fifties didn't talk about things like that. it was taboo. they either suffered along or got through it somehow.
Overmedication of situational emotional difficulties. It's a reflection of today's society. We are too busy to feel anything or work through anything or to spend time on ourselves in therapy. So, often, but not always, of course, if an emotion/symptom is hampering our ability to function, we medicate it rather than the problem.

In an ideal world, medication should only be used as a moderating approach, as a *stablilizer* until the individual is able to take advantage of a more remedial approach, like cognitive-behavioural therapy. Long-term wellness and coping depends on this. But, we're too busy, family physicians, who we likely see first for a problem of any kind, typically operate soley from a medical paradigm and this biases treatment options.

The reality is, meds will only be effective so long as you keep taking them. As a result, the individual is quickly "fixed", everybody's happy, but the person also learns nothing and over time, risks really serious side effects.

At present, we diagnose mental illness through paper-and-pencil methods. We are often just asked a series of questions. If we positively answer enough of these questions, we're deemed to have a chemical imbalance.but, without actual CT scan, and otherwise hard-evidence to support this.

What I've said here is a huge generalization. Obviously, some people are not helped by remedial approaches and really do need medication and for the long-term. But, ideally, some form of medication, tapered until remedial treatment can be engaged in, is an ideal.if a true mental illness actually exists.

Bottom line though: we're NOT all sick. All too often, we medicate symptoms not actual disorders.
You betcha, we're all looney toones and we have been driven nuttier than fruit cakes by people with so many other mental problems that only the wise, sensitve and caring people like ourselves who are willing to answer in the first place and who are being driven nuts by stupid people with nothing better to do with their time in the second place than to ask assinine questions over and over and over in the first place.

Clear?

Good!
mental conditions are no different from medical conditions. the brain is part of the body, it is subject to getting abnormal.
long time ago mental conditions had a stigma and we still do, so people hid it, and never seeked treatment because they didn't want the lable of being crazy attached to them, and let's be honest mental health care was pretty bad back them.

they only came up with DSM classification over the past couple of decades. the DSM is the diagnostical and statistical manual of mental disorders. it is the bible of psychiatrists.

so because of the fact that mental illness doesn't have a bad image as much as it did before, more people are seeking treatment, and more research is being done, therefore you're gonna hear about it more.

it is easier to classify something in order to understand it better in order to find better treatment.
there are so many people with mental problems because they don't want to deal with their life. the doctors, pharmecutical companies, etc. have convinced people that they have a disorder and need some sort of pill that will cure them. it is outrageous at the thought that over half of this country is on some sort of depression medication. i came out with a website, more for women, but it will work for everyone. i think it is the answer to life. go to: www.ilovemeinc.com. if people will read it, do what it sais, i think that it will change the world. again, go to ::www.ilovemeinc.com
some mental illness is organic, and genetic. our population is growing so there are more people with a organic and genetic illnesss's. it is also more out of the closet, and talked about more today than before. there is a lot more awareness of mental illnes due to the media, and the Internet. in the 50's a lot of people were hospitalized, and did not return to society, until the late 1960"s. i know because i worked in a large mental health facility in the late 1960's and helped alot of people with placement back into the community. i think today, there is a lot more psychological illnesses, such as self cutting, anxiety, depression, phobias, ocd disorders, because there are a lot more stressors in to days society. also the drug companies advertise medication for most every ailment there is today. no i do not believe we are more looney tunes today, we just have a lot more stress today, causing a lot more illnesses, and we now are aware of a lot of these illnesses, due to media, and self awareness. hope this answers your question.
